Standing desk

If your job requires you to be in front of a computer screen for long hours, you are interested in learning the benefits of a standing desk.

Unless we can completely change our work, the best we can do is to create as healthy a work environment as possible.

In this post we are going to learn the adjustments we can all make to work without harming our health and improve our productivity.

What is a standing desk?

Standing desks are work tables that allow the height of the surface to be adjusted manually or by means of a motor to work standing up.

Consequences of working in a seated position

Sitting is not a problem in itself, the problem is that we accumulate many hours in this position.

  • The total number of sitting hours we accumulate negatively affects our health, causing all kinds of diseases and even increasing the risk of mortality.
  • The longer the periods of sitting without some movement, the worse the results of health indicators.
  • Muscular pains of all types, although back and neck pains predominate.
  • Atrophy of the buttocks

This also applies to people who train on a daily basis.

The best way to combat the negative effects of long hours of sitting is to change your posture and add movement to your body....

Benefits of a standing desk

You don't have to spend the whole working day on your feet, in fact standing for long hours also has its risks, but it is useful to alternate periods of standing and sitting to obtain the following benefits:

  • Increased energy expenditure
  • Reduction of back pain
  • Improved glycemic control. Study
  • Increased productivity. Study
  • Decrease in general fatigue

Types of standing desks

The most sophisticated version of all. Requires electrical connection.

It is a desk with buttons that raise the table to the desired height.

The FLEXISPOT ED5 is the model we have been using at home. The motor is powerful, very quiet, very precise and has anti-collision safety measures. The load capacity is 100 kg.

All this makes it very easy to go up and down as you need to vary the posture, without any laziness.

It can memorize positions for greater agility.

In addition, we complete the table with an arm for the screen, which also makes it easily adjustable so you can adapt it to every position you take.

Eleva Desk

For Didi, we chose the customized ELEVA PRO model, 2 meters long and 1 meter wide. ELEVA DESK.

It is the only board on standing desk that we have found with these dimensions. Especially useful for people who need space for 2 large screens + tower.

Other models, despite allowing two screens, the distance to them is too close, being usually 60 or 80 cm maximum. This is the major advantage of this desk.

The load capacity is 100 kg.

This type of desk is a before and after for those who work long hours in front of the computer.

Totally recommended to release cervical and lumbar tensions... typical in those people who maintain a sitting posture for hours.

The cordless option is a table with a hand crank. In the same way as in the motorized version you can adjust the height, but it is done manually.

Platform that raises the screen

The most economical solution is to adapt your existing desk by raising the computer screen so that you can work standing up.

On the other hand, it is not as easy to change from standing / sitting as in the previous options.

It's a way to take advantage of the desk you already have and turn it into a standing desk with a small investment.

Creating a healthy workspace

We are not designed to work for hours locked in the same posture.

To respect our biology and try to create a healthier environment, follow these recommendations.

Natural light

We know the risks associated with artificial light, yet there are jobs that do not allow us to avoid it completely.

Instead, we can lessen those negative effects with :

  • Exposure to natural light: work near a window and avoid direct light hitting the screen.
  • Using blue light blocking glasses and adjusting the screen brightness.
  • Making breaks also for the sight: changing the focus of vision and bringing the gaze to distant objects. It is recommended not to work facing the wall so that it is easier to take these breaks of sight without having to program them.

It's in our genes to be in contact with nature, even when we work. If you can't take the office to the mountains, at least bring a little piece of the mountain to the office.

Plants help concentration, reduce stress and purify the air.

The biggest problem with traditional desks is not so much the posture but the lack of movement.

It is recommended to take breaks to change the position and introduce movement every 30 - 45 minutes. Study

You can simply walk or add a few repetitions of non-weight exercises: squat, push-ups, abdominal plank or even hang if you have a pull-up bar handy.

Ergonomic chair

As we have said, it is not necessary (or good) to maintain a standing posture for prolonged periods of time. For when you want to take another posture, ergonomic chairs are ideal.

Unlike a normal chair, it does not have a backrest, which means that it is forces you to keep your core active. In addition, all your weight does not rest on the totally inactive buttocksbut it does so on the tibiae, if you do it in the most common way.

But, in the chair you can take different positions as well.

Anti-fatigue mat

This surface helps to stand more comfortably for longer periods of time.

Rock mat and trigger point ball

You can also take advantage of one of the standing periods to work on your muscles and gain mobility in your feet.
