Dates: June 12 - 15, 2025
Location: Navy Pier, Chicago, Illinois, USA
Where it can be seen: HYROX YouTube

Hyrox has a short history.

The first event was held less than seven years ago in Leipzig (Germany) on October 20, 2018. The first World Cup was just six years ago in Oberhausen (also Germany).

The winners there were the Germans Lukas Storath (first time under an hour) and Imke Salander. During the genesis period it is normal that Germans won because only Germans competed.. Any athlete could register for that world championship. The number of participants was 450 (more than 420 of them German).

These are all the world championships that have been held so far:

The big winners so far have been Hunter McIntyre and Lauren Weeks with 3 world championships each. Both did not win in last year's edition in Nice (Hunter fifth and Lauren third). Both come to Chicago with the idea of winning their fourth, although Weeks is more of a favorite than McIntyre.

The world championship of the 2024/25 season is going to be held in the windy city of Chicago. Thousands of age group competitors from all over the world have been fighting for a slot to compete in the HYROX World Cup party.

Thousands of competitors from all over the world will fight for the podium in their age group. The world's best athletes will fight for the most evenly matched elite 15 world championship in history. The fun World Team Relays will be repeated after the success of Nice and the debut edition of the Elite 15 double championships will be held, all of them with Spanish representatives.

HYROX Individual Elite 15

The category Elite 15 Individual in HYROX is the most prestigious and competitive of the circuit. It is composed of the 15 best athletes in the worldboth men and women, who will face each other in the World Championship for the title of HYROX World Champion.

The main event of the weekend. The fifteen and the fifteen best in the world in the event that generates more prestige and struggle.

These competitors have qualified in one of the four Majors of the year. The big dominators of the Majors have earned the status of favorites in their own right. Lauren Weeks has won three of the four and Australian James Kelly (JK) has won two of them.

The other Majors winners were:

  • Austrian Alex Roncevic (current world champion).
  • The North American Dylan Scott (irregular and capable of the best and the worst).
  • The very young Australian Joanna Wietzryk.

Despite the great equality (especially in men) I think it would be a great surprise if the winner did not come out of this quintet.

The classification is obtained through a system of events known as Majors and a final qualifying round:

🔹 1. The 4 Majors (main qualifying events):

  • Throughout the season, 4 competitions are held, called Majors (e.g. Houston, Vienna, Manchester, Hong Kong).
  • In each Major, the 3 best times (men and women) that have not previously qualified, obtain direct pass to the World Championship.
  • This adds up to 12 athletes classified (3 x 4).

🔹 2. Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ):

  • After the Majors, an extra event is held or the 3 overall best times of the entire season (who have not yet qualified).
  • These athletes complete the list of 15 participants per gender.

The Elite 15 men's final in Chicago was a real tactical and physical battle. From the first meter, Hunter McIntyre 🇺🇸 set a brutal pace and led with authority until the halfway point.

But everything changed after the burpees.

Germany's Tim Wenisch 🇩🇪, who had managed his strength perfectly, took advantage of the run after the burpees to overtake McIntyre and take the lead. From there, he never looked back.

In the wall balls, the accumulated effort took its toll: Wenisch slowed down and McIntyre came dangerously close again, but the German held his nerve to cross the finish line as world champion.

At the end, Wenisch shared in tears:

"I missed the last two years of this event, and I worked for two years for this. I just wanted to come back and see if I could still do it...and I did."

hyrox 2025 champion Tim Wenisch

A simple but powerful statement that sums up sacrifice, perseverance and passion that took him to the top of the podium. His victory not only brings him back to the highest competitive level, but also establishes him as a reference of improvement within the sport.

What a finale the women's Elite 15 gave us in Chicago!

The race started with Lauren Weeks taking the lead from the first meters, showing her experience and usual pace. But she was not alone...

In the early workouts, Joanna Wietrzyk kept her pace steady, stalking the lead. Halfway through the race, Linda Meier, almost noiselessly, was climbing positions with a steady and clean pace in the stations.

Meier made her masterstroke: she first overtook Weeks in the sled pull and then surprised Joanna in the burpees, from that moment on, the German acknowledged that she had a good chance of winning the event.

Linda Meier, in her first appearance in a World Elite 15, was crowned world champion with an incredible time of 58:56, making it clear that she is here to stay.

The surprise of the championship: Linda Meier, from unknown to world champion! 🏆🇩🇪

HYROX Mixed Relay Invitational

After its premiere in Nice, the relay world championship by country is probably the most exciting event of the championship.

England won, followed by USA (the absence of Weeks due to injury was key) and Germany.

20 countries will compete with two male and two female representatives. Each will perform two workouts with their previous kilometer. The choice of which workout each athlete performs is at the discretion of each team.

15 selections chosen directly as the 15 countries with the most representatives in age groups and 5 handpicked selections.

A big favorite: USA with Lauren Weeks (probably push and farmer), Hunter (ergometers), Dylan Scott (burpees and strides) and after Meg's absence there is no communication yet of her replacement (I guess between Tafuto and Griffith).

A favorite for second place - Australia with JK, Joanna, elite 15 Jess Petrow and none other than James Newbury (5th CrossFit Games 2019).

And a group of favorites for the third: England, Holland and Germany. The fact that most of the members of these teams compete the day before in elite 15 makes Spain and Belgium arrive fresher and with options.

The Spanish team is formed by Elena Rouco with Sled pull and Farmer (she participates on Saturday in the elite doubles), Rober Viciedo with burpees and lungers (also doubles), Manuela Garcia with Sled push and Wall balls and Jorge Gonzalez with the ergometers.

Pelayo Menéndez refused to participate in order to save his strength for Saturday's elite doubles race, where he is a great favorite for victory.

In contrast to the individual or double categories, the Mixed Relay Invitational does not require prior performance qualification. On the other hand:

🔹 It is 100% by invitation:

  • HYROX selects and invites the most outstanding teams from all over the world.
  • Criteria may include:
    • Results in previous HYROX events
    • Popularity and influence in the community
    • Country representation and diversity
    • Individual performance in elite categories

🔹 15 invited teams:

  • Only compete 15 mixed teams in total, which raises the competitive level.
  • Each team represents a country or region, creating an atmosphere similar to that of a "World Cup".

HYROX Doubles

This is the category in which 15 best couples in the worldin either the male or female format, within the modality Pro Doubles.

15 pairs of boys and 15 pairs of girls. Qualified by placing in the top three in five qualifying events.

The elite doubles is the great premiere of this world championship. A test influenced by what the participants have gone through during the weekend.

Let me explain.

England's Jake Dearden and James Kelly are a pair in doubles and participate in the individual final on Thursday. Also in the relay on Friday with clear podium chances. On Saturday they are one of the favorite pairs. James Kelly is also the big favorite in singles... if he wins on Thursday he will have interviews to give and events to attend. If he doesn't, we will have to see how he manages it. How much will his performance be affected by what happens during the 48 hours before?

The same case for Lauren Weeks, Joanna, Weersma, Wenisch, Linda Maier...

As in the individual category, the access to the Elite 15 Doubles is achieved through a structured system:

🔹 1. The 4 Majors:

  • During the season there are 4 Majors (selected major competitions).
  • In each, the 3 best couples (men's and women's) that are not already qualified get a direct place in the World Championship.
  • This generates 12 places per category (3 couples x 4 events).

🔹 2. Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ):

  • At the end of the season, the most important 3 best remaining pairs by overall time (who have not previously qualified).
  • This completes the 15 equipment of the Elite 15 Doubles category.

Pelayo Menendez and Rich Ryan arrived at the HYROX World Cup 2025 as favorites in the Pro Doubles Elite Men's categoryafter scoring the world record in the qualifying race in Miami. However, during the final race, no information was provided on its performance and did not appear among the leaders at any time. Pelayo explained that he had suffered a tear in his calf muscle and was forced to drop out of the race.

The victory went to the German duo of Tim Wenisch and Sebastian Czaplawho gave an impeccable performance and were proclaimed world champions in the first official edition of the Pro Doubles Elite.

Second place went to the Spaniards Javi Vicedo and Luis GarciaThey surprised with a solid race, without mistakes and with a great understanding in all the exercises. A historic result for the Spanish HYROX, which is increasingly consolidated in the international scene.
